Ebook About "Taut and elegant, carefully introspected and thoughtfully explored."—The New York TimesFrom award-winning author Sarah Pinsker comes a novel about one family and the technology that divides them. Everybody's getting one. Val and Julie just want what’s best for their kids, David and Sophie. So when teenage son David comes home one day asking for a Pilot, a new brain implant to help with school, they reluctantly agree. This is the future, after all. Soon, Julie feels mounting pressure at work to get a Pilot to keep pace with her colleagues, leaving Val and Sophie part of the shrinking minority of people without the device. Before long, the implications are clear, for the family and society: get a Pilot or get left behind. With government subsidies and no downside, why would anyone refuse? And how do you stop a technology once it's everywhere? Those are the questions Sophie and her anti-Pilot movement rise up to answer, even if it puts them up against the Pilot's powerful manufacturer and pits Sophie against the people she loves most.Book We Are Satellites Review :
Once again, Pinsker comes through with a thought-provoking story about the effect on society of a technological advance, so different from her other works. This is her second full-length novel, but Pinsker has a lot of shorter stories, was a professional musician for many years, and says that this book has been incubating for a long time. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the family members - younger Sophie is particularly interesting in that she is subject to seizures, which blocks her from getting a Pilot even if she wanted one. Over the years, Sophie becomes more self-reliant, to the surprise (and delight) of her two mothers (the kids refer to them as "Ma" and "Mom".) Val and Julie have quite different personalities, which leads to a major conflict later in the book, and I was surprised to find myself invested in what was happening to older son David, who finds that nobody will believe him when he tries to explain how the Pilot makes him feel.Pinsker finds a way to express, on the printed page, thought processes and emotions, things that might be difficult to understand otherwise. I was drawn into the story and was sad, in a way, to reach the end (even though the ending was satisfying.) I have loved everything of Pinsker's I have read and look forward to her future work. Sarah Pinsker has an extraordinary ability to peer into the near future and see what sort of trouble humanity might get itself into next. In We Are Satellites, she explores the ramifications of a brain implant designed to improve people's ability to multi-task by telling how the implants effect a family of four, two who have it and two who don't. The book's focus bounces back and forth between the family members, with each bringing a unique perspective to both the interpersonal and societal questions which the implants raise. All in all, a thought provoking and satisfying novel and a worthy successor to Pinsker's first book, A Song for a New Day.
